Two equal boxes (A and B) stand on a floor with two sides parallel and only a few centimeters apart (fig. 4.1). Insert a long stiff plank vertically in the space between the boxes and pull horizontally at the upper end of the plank, in an attempt to separate the boxes. Will both boxes move, or only one of them?

4.2 Dropped Books

Take a stack of nine identical books and hold them horizontally by pressing them together with your hands (fig. 4.2). Then decrease the pressure slowly until the books are just about to start falling down. Which book(s) will start to slide first?
